How Points Work on Sunday

Watching your first Formula 1 weekend can be overwhelming when cars cross the line and numbers start flashing across the broadcast. The core objective of the main Sunday Grand Prix is simple: finish among the top ten drivers to earn world championship points. In a standard full-length race, the winner takes 25 points, with the remaining scoring spots awarded on a declining 18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 sliding scale down to tenth place. Anyone finishing eleventh or lower receives nothing.

Understanding the Sprint Difference

On select weekends, the schedule includes a shorter standalone contest known as a Sprint before Sunday's main event. Under the 2026 F1 race and sprint points structure, this Saturday contest pays points only to the top eight finishers, starting with eight points for first place and scaling down to a single point for eighth. Sprint points count directly toward the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships, but they represent a separate session classification rather than an addition to Sunday's race tally. A driver who takes second in a Sprint and third in a full Grand Prix collects seven points on Saturday and 15 on Sunday, creating two distinct scores from the same event.

Weather Stoppages and Bonus Point Changes

A Grand Prix does not always run its full scheduled distance, particularly if severe weather or incidents force an early stoppage. To award points, the leading car must complete at least two consecutive laps without Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car intervention. If an interrupted race covers between 25 percent and half its distance, points are reduced, with a winner taking 13 points rather than 25; reaching at least 75 percent restores the full scale. For a Sprint, at least 50 percent of the scheduled distance must be completed under clean laps for its 8-to-1 scale to apply at all. Finally, newcomers should note that setting the fastest lap of the race no longer yields a bonus championship point, as the FIA removed that incentive starting from the 2025 season.
