Understanding the Long Lap Route
During a Grand Prix race, broadcast graphics might suddenly indicate that a rider has been handed a double Long Lap penalty. For someone watching for the first time, this means the rider must steer off the racing line and take an extended asphalt loop on the outside of a specific corner twice during the event.
The designated lane is bordered by painted white lines established before the weekend begins. Understanding how MotoGP double long lap penalties are served helps viewers track race strategy, as the rider must navigate the corridor safely on two separate laps, maintain proper track limits, and avoid overtaking any other competitor inside the loop.
Notification and the Serving Window
The sanction is communicated directly to the rider through their onboard dashboard display, while timing monitors alert the pit crew. The countdown to serve the penalty does not start immediately at the moment of an infraction; rather, the five-lap compliance window begins when the rider crosses the finish line for the first time after the notification is sent.
Riders cannot enter the penalty lane if yellow flags or caution signals are active in that sector of the circuit. In that situation, each unusable lap is added to the total window allowed to complete the procedure.
What Happens if Laps Are Missed
Failing to complete both loops within the five-lap allowance triggers an escalation rather than a simple post-race time adjustment. If a rider misses the deadline, stewards typically escalate the sanction to a pit lane ride-through, requiring the rider to traverse pit lane at the mandated speed limit without stopping.
If a race is stopped with a red flag before the loops are finished, the penalty carries over to the restart or converts into an equivalent penalty determined by the stewards. Similarly, if an infraction happens too close to the end of the race for the signals to be shown, stewards apply an equivalent time penalty to the final classification.
